This weekend Bob, Kitty, Abe and I went to the border of Hong Kong and ShenZhen and found treasure! We took the Luo Bao subway to a shopping mecca called Lou Hu at the end of the line.
Kitty and me (above) are standing in front of a small fraction of the fabrics available at the stores. Any textile, whether it be chiffon, silk, or jersey has its own section with hundreds of color and pattern options.
We ran into some seriously politically incorrect textures as well, we’d never buy fur but we’ll admit their collection was impressive.
Even awesomer, tailors sit on stools near the bolts of fabrics and ask if they can make you a custom dress or suit right there. Abe asked how much it would cost to make a tuxedo and the price was 800 RMB.
And dear god, it wouldn’t be a Chinese shopping experience without fakes. Goddamn, look at these fake Loubos!!!! They are perfect replicas down to the box. 600 RMB a pop and holy crap they are just delicious. We didn’t get any but Kitty and I were really giddy from just trying them on.
Every shoe store at Lou Hu carried these babies, however, it might be bad karma to buy them. We feel for companies that lose their IP.
But mostly Lou Hu made us feel mesmerized. The waves of design and color swept us away.
However enchanted we were, we knew that when one shops at these markets, one must haggle. This lady wanted to charge Kitty 875 RMB for a wool scarf. Miraculously, we brought the price down to 130 RMB. Store owners expect that you will talk down prices so they set them very, very high. There are no hard feelings though— it’s basically a fun game everyone likes to play.
Our favorite parts of the market are the shops filled with creative objects we had never seen before. One had MC Hammeresque jean shorts with stuffed bunny head pockets. Another vendor hand-sculpts customized clay figures in any size.
We left the place on a high. I could not stop wondering, “when are we coming back?” Fortunately, all of our friends in Haxlr8r and Hong Kong are begging for us to take them to Lou Hu. It looks like we’ll definitely be making a few trips back.
