Our chairman Cyril had a birthday and we went all out. While team Shaka laser cut a Haxlr8r logo for his cake and we made Cy his favorite food ever.
Cyril waxed poetic about his favorite food as being a pot of sin with a thousand flavors— we later figured out that this was the literal translation for fondue from French.
He warned us not to go out of our way, but food is what we do so it was fun to hunt down a place that sold Emmental Swiss and French Gruyere in ShenZhen. We found our treasure at a grocery store called Ole inside the Holiday Plaza which is located at the “Windows of the World” stop of the metro. If you ever come to ShenZhen and miss the flavors of home, we highly recommend a trip.
Fondue is stupid easy to make so we fancy’d it up by sous viding steak bites! We also picked out some classy dipping friends such as asparagus, quail eggs, cornichons, crusty bread, and shiitake mushrooms.
After we ran our knife through everything, it was time to pour beer over our mountain of cheese and add a little flour.
The amount of beer we poured in was decidedly unscientific, it was a big ol’ bottle minus some sips taken out. All it took after a vigorous stir with chopsticks was adding some salt and pepper.
Our friends got in there pretty fast and followed our advice to “DIP DEEP.” The vegetarian team Axio said they had the “best lunch ever.” Those poor people, it’s hard to have fun in China when you have dietary restrictions.
Cyril went out of his mind that we actually made fondue, haha, unbeknownst to him this was Abe’s classic bachelor meal at CalTech. For future birthdays, we hope the food our friends request will always be this easy.
